The opposition SLPP flagbearer contender, Lawyer Alpha Timbo has refuted claims by a local newspaper that he referred tohis flagbearer opponents, Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio and Dr.Kandeh Yumkella as “undemocratic” because of their involvement with the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) regime.
Speaking in an interview with Global Times yesterday, Mr. Timbo denied ever making those statements, emphasizing that statements attributed to him by the newspaper are figments of the imagination of the writer.
Among other things, a local tabloid also claimed in its Wednesday, February 3rd edition that Mr. Timbo while addressing ‘thousands’ of supporters in the east of Freetown last Sunday accused Mr. Bio of ‘promoting tribalism and impunity’.
The newspaper also claimed that the former SLPP Assistant Secretary while recalling the impeachment of Dr. Yumkella as Students’ Union President at Njala University College then took a swipe at the former UNIDO boss for ‘doing nothing for the people of Sierra Leone’ during his time at the UN.
Responding, Lawyer Timbo said it was disingenuous on the part of the newspaper to attribute statement to him which he did not utter in the first place. He said as a lawyer he is always very sensitive and overly opposed to any statement which impugn on the character of others including SLPP flagbearer contenders.
“The truth is that I have never made those statements and I could not have made them because, the race for the flagbeareship of the SLPP has not even started yet to warrant making very offensive statement about others”, Lawyer Timbo said.
He described SLPP as a ‘family’ and the flagbearer contest as ‘brotherly’, noting that there was little if anything one could gain from assassinating the character of other SLPP members.
