Augustine Kei Banya, director of planning in the Ministry of Lands, Country Planning and Environment on Tuesday 7th June, 2016 told Awareness Times Newspaper that the Minister of Lands, Country Planning and Environment, Honourable Dianna Konomanyi is set to restore sanity to Freetown by putting down unplanned structures.
“The ministry has been encountering a lot of problems regarding the proper planning of Freetown, especially with people who have been grabbing government lands, and defying the warnings imposed by the ministry,” he stated.
He said that certain people are very lawless and believes that those kinds of people deserve no mercy in the demolition exercise. “Knocking down those structures that are in wrong places with the aid of the police and the military will see to the opening of passages and roads that will facilitate the easy movement of vehicles and people. This is will particularly important for pregnant women,” he added.
The Awareness Times Newspaper also spoke with the acting regional police commander Freetown, West, Chief Superintendent Augustine Keili who explained to this press that they are in charge of providing security to the ministry. He was quick to point out that it was not their job to demolish structures: “It is the ministry that demolishes structures; all we do is provide security for them, so that nobody gets hurt.”
It can be recalled that the Minister of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment Madam Diana Konomanyi started the demolition of illegal structures on government land last week at Grafton and yesterday’s exercise at old SLBS compound at Goderich and continued the exercise behind the American Embassy at Hill Station. This exercise is in a bid to remove all illegal buildings and structures from state land.
