A variety of disability groups in Sierra Leone have endorsed the choice of Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden to be the political head of the ministry responsible for disability issues in Sierra Leone.
Speaking through an interpreter to this newspaper over the weekend, Sierra Leone Association of the Deaf (SLAD) expressed their profound thanks to the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma who in his wisdom appoints Dr. Blyden to serve in the capacity of Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs.
The association members recalled that Dr. Blyden has always been kind to them through providing them with an office room space in her former office at 17 Garrison Street and also helping them with internet facility to handle their correspondences.
The hearing impaired citizens acknowledged that Dr. Blyden is a grassroot person who can feel the burning issues affecting the disable across the country.
Similar compliment was expressed by Ishmael K. Gborie, chairman Help Empower Polio Persons Organisation (HEPPO). He said, the appointment of Dr. Blyden is indeed a move to the right direction.
The HEPPO Chairman further stated that the appointment has restored their hopes and aspirations in the Government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, adding that Dr. Blyden is amongst the few persons who still consider disable to be important in the development of our society. He said Dr. Blyden has always treated them as her own family by providing them with food and basic amenities.
Tejan Kamara, chairman Cotton Tree Disable Youths and Memunatu Conteh, chairlady Wilberforce Street Disable have also, with their members, applauded the recent appointment of Dr. Blyden to be the political head of the ministry that will be responsible for disability issues in Sierra Leone, assuring that they would all throw their full support behind her during and after Parliamentary approval.
