As the debate for transparency and accountability intensifies within the SLPP, the former 2012 SLPP Vice Presidential Candidate and Chairman, 2012 Elections Fund Raising Committee, Dr Kadie Sesay has, in a strongly worded letter to Hon Justice Tholla Thompson, exposed the gross insincerity of John Benjamin and his allies over the non-submission of the Financial Report of the 2012 SLPP Presidential campaign to the PPRC.
In a letter dated 2nd September 2016, Dr Kadie Sesay carefully exposed the gross insincerity of Mr Benjamin and his allies by explaining that on the 4th December 2012 as Chairman of the Campaign Fund Raising Committee, she submitted a comprehensive Financial Report on campaign income and expenses at the first SLPP National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting after the 2012 elections.
Pointing to evidence of Mr Benjamin’s insincerity, Dr Kadie Sesay stated: “That Report [Financial Report on Campaign income and expenses] was adopted by the NEC Meeting which Mr Benjamin himself chaired.”
As a former university lecturer, Dr Kadie Sesay appeared to be lecturing Mr Benjamin on the procedure of how to submit the Report to PPRC and who had the responsibility: “After this, it was the responsibility of the Executive headed by him [Mr Benjamin] to submit the Report to the PPRC in fulfilment of the Party’s statutory obligations.”
Showing further evidence of Mr Benjamin’s insincerity, Dr Kadie Sesay went on: “Since that NEC Meeting [4th December 2012] nobody has ever requested me or Mr Bio to submit any other report. Mr Benjamin continued as Chairman and Leader of the Party eight months afterwards and he never once raised with me or Mr Bio any concern of the Financial Report.”
Also raising questions about Mr Benjamin’s competence as Party Chairman at the time, Dr Kadie Sesay added: “Given the great importance of this issue one would have expected that a responsible Party Chairman would have been minded to send a memorandum on the subject to either the former Presidential Candidate or myself if he had any concerns.”
In a defiant mood, Dr Kadie Sesay challenged Mr Benjamin: “I [Dr Kadie Sesay] hereby challenge Mr Benjamin to provide any documentary evidence to show that he had raised his concerns during his tenure as Chairman and Leader with either the Presidential Candidate or myself after the Financial Report was adopted at NEC”.
To show Mr Bio and Dr Sesay’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Dr Kadie Sesay assured the PPRC Chairman that she will re-submit another copy of the said Financial Report to the SLPP National Secretariat for onward transmission to PPRC. However, she made clear that the Report excludes an amount in excess of Le 1 billion from the aspirants for the 2012 Presidential elections and US$263,000 from the Nigerian Government both received by Mr. Benjamin as Chairman and Leader.
The question many SLPP members are asking now is: Can Mr John Benjamin account for the over Le 1 billion received from the aspirants of 2012 Presidential election and the US$263,000 received from the Nigerian Government?
