Latest reports received from informed sources indicates that all may not be well with the President Ernest Bai Koroma led executive government in Sierra Leone as some aggrieved parties are already planning impeachment proceedings against the Presidency.
According to Sierra Leone iReporter, some aggrieved civil rights activists and Parliament members belonging to both the SLPP and the APC has threatened to facilitate the “quick” impeachment of President Koroma for an alleged offence of “working against the interest of the people of Sierra Leone”.
It was gathered that the un identified Civil rights group has made progressed efforts to bring some Lawmakers on their side to impeach the president if doing so eventually becomes an option they would have to explore.
However, indications emerged yesterday that some members of the Parliament are on the same page with the civil rights group in their bid to impeach President Ernest Bai Koroma. This is just as the lawmakers have disclosed that they have identified over 20 constitutional violations against the President, which would form part of their impeachment notice.
According to Sierra Leone iReporter, one of the constitutional violations would be the government’s refusal to respond to the ECOWAS Law suit filed by sacked vice President, Alhaji Sam Sumana. With rumors that the president has advised his justice ministry not to respond to the law suit, activists believes this action would amount to a breach of his oath of office and the 1991 Sierra Leone constitution.
A high ranking officer in the Parliament House who revealed details of the plotted impeachment proceedings said that majority of Parliamentarians in both the SLPP And APC have resolved to work together for the common good of the country by impeaching President Koroma for “incompetence, corruption and unprecedented impunity.”
He disclosed that most Parliament members are unhappy with the state of Sierra Leone’s economy and how the President has handled critical issues concerning the country’s development in the last two years, not forgetting the decision of the government to clamp down on social media users, a decision which they believe would eventually be used against them in coming months.
“Never in the history of Sierra Leone has a leader displayed such crass incompetence, corruption and unprecedented impunity as we have seen in President Koroma. It is glaring and you can feel it. Mr. President, with due respect, has shown that he is not capable of running this country. That is the basic truth”, he stated.
The ranking officer further said that the impeachment plot against Koroma was not a partisan affair, explaining that lawmakers from all the political parties have identified with the “cause” and will not give up until the President is “sent packing.”
Sierra Leone iReporter further revealed that an investigative committee has been set up to work on the 20 impeachable offences which would be used to perfect the impeachment proceedings in coming weeks.
