Koidu, headquarters of Sierra Leone’s Kono district has been cut off, according to residents and NGO workers in and around the town.
However, report by Umaru Fofonah states that both the Paramount Chief and the Ag Mayor – who are at present outside the district – say it has not, even if admitting that it is difficult to make it across.
This comes amid an officially-sanctioned illicit mining activity by an Israeli businessman on the road leading to the diamond-rich town. The heavy downpour has meant that embankment and inadequate culvert on a bypass route have caused flooding with several houses said to have submerged.
There are reports of protests by angry youths with riot police deployed in the area. Shops have reportedly closed.
