What would push a man to sell his own biological brother to merchants of death from Kenema to Freetown?

This was the chorus in court last week when a young man, Abdulai Russell 27, who hails from Gbangbantu, Bonthe district, southern province of Sierra Leone, was arrested by the Police in Freetown for selling his 10 year old younger brother, Umaru Russell for three million Leone at Big Market, Wallace Johnson street in Freetown after negotiations to sell failed at King Jimmy.

It was learnt that the irony of the crime, apart from selling his brother, the accused was also trick by the agent, an Anti-Human Trafficking official who perfected his arrest. When he was charged to court and subsequently arraigned before the Principal magistrate, Abu Bakarr Binneh Kamara of the Siaka Steven street court No.1 on Friday April 8, 2016, he was sent to the Pademba Road male Prison on remand for ten days.

Russell, is facing one count criminal charge of Trafficking in Persons.

The 27 year old man (accused), who narrating how he carried out the nefarious deal, pleaded for mercy, as according to him, he was under severe economic pressure which led him to the crime.

According to the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Samuel Kamara, the accused was arrested on Friday March 11, 2016 by the operatives of the Central Police Division who acted on a tip off.

When the Police recovered the sold boy from the accused, they had no option but to hand him over to a child Agency at Kingtom in Freetown.

The coordinator at the agency expressed dismay over the crime of child trafficking in the city, pointing out that barely one months ago similar case was brought to his office. He regretted that those who carry out this heinous crime do it with such ease as if it was a normal business.

He warned those who are involved in such crime to have a rethink or leave the country in the alternative. Meanwhile, Abdulai Russell’s matter was adjourned to Monday April 18, 2016.
