President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone has again sparked public reaction amidst the ongoing political momentum of his alleged plans to to change the constitution and seek a third term when his current mandate expires in 2018.
It’s not a wholly new campaign in Sierra Leone – the agitations for extension had started as early as 2013, barely a year into Koroma’s second term. The calls got louder later in 2016 after the end of the disastrous Ebola outbreak but was soon laid to rest when the President in an interview with Newday Magazine said “I am a democrat. I respect the law and will ensure that what is constitutional obtains. I will leave at the fullness of time”.
However, it seems the third term Agenda is far from extinguished after a well circulated video which hit the social media hours ago showed President Koroma boasting of his political prowess to seek an extension in office without any hindrance whatsoever.
As shown in the video, President Koroma says if he wanted to extend his term in office he would have started work on it early enough and “no one would have stopped me”.
Many have reacted to his statement calling it arrogant and a disrespect for the country’s constitution and people. Watch the video below and share your thoughts in comments.
