The Office of the Registrar General yesterday tendered marital documents in respect of the ill-fated civil union between Ali Kabba and Diana Finda Konomanyi, as the bigamy and perjury trail of the former continues at the High Court in Freetown, presided over by Justice Miata Samba.

The defendant, an opposition stalwart, was charged with three counts of bigamy, making false declaration, and making false statement contrary to the Perjury Act.

The prosecution charged Mr. Kabba to court on 23 December, 2015 after a report was made against him at the Criminal Investigation Department by his estranged former wife, Minister of Lands, Country Planning and Environment, Diana Finda Konomanyi.

While tendering the documents in court, third prosecution witness Akundayo Pratt introduced himself as a Civil Servant attached to the Registrar General’s Office, who is the custodian of registry instruments, including marriage certificates.

He said he had been subpoenaed by the court to provide cerrtain document in respect of Alie Kabba and Diana Konomanyi.

Mr. Pratt tendered the 2013 civil marriage certificate of the couple, certificate of true copy of a single marriage application form, receipt of payment by Alie Kabba in connection with the marriage between him and Diana Konomannyi, affidavit sworn by Alie Kabba on 12 August, 2013, a true certificate copy of the affidavit, a special license of marriage of the complainant and the defendant and the address of Registrar.

Also, one Evelyn Z. Wilson testified that she had witnessed the marriage between the duo and signed the marriage certificate, adding that she had known Ms. Konomanyi for over 30 years as her adopted daughter.

Under cross-examination by counsel Francis Kaifala, Ms. Wilson said the defendant had told her that he was marriage but had divorced his wife, adding that she believed him because he is a man of ‘integrity and calibre’.

She said the marital certificate indicated that the defendant had divorced his former wife, while Ms. Konomanyi said she was a spinster, adding that it was only in the Magistrate Court that she told her about a previous marriage.

One Yabom Lansana, who introduced herself as a business contractor, said she knew the Lands Minister as a friend for over 20 years and came to know the defendant through the latter when they were planning their marriage in 2013.

She said she witnessed the wedding ceremony of the defendant and Ms Konomanyi, adding that she was the one who drove the defendant to the venue of the wedding and also signed the marriage certificate. The matter continues.
