It has just emerged that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) will meet in an emergency session this week end in Freetown principally to discuss petitions forwarded to it by the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and to extend the tenure of office of the all executive.

In January this year, NEC extended the tenure of the current executive to second week in March in anticipation that the lower level elections would have been held to pave the way for the party’s delegates’ conference to be held at the end of the month.

However, those elections were put on hold occasioned by series of petitions filed by the KKY Movement, the campaign outfit of the former UNIDO boss, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella and individuals close to him.

A total of 15 petitions/concerns and complaints were received by the PPRC which has now been forwarded to the National Officers of the SLPP for which an emergency NEC meeting has been slated for Saturday to discuss them.

Crucially also, SLPP sources said the tenure of all executives are expected to be extended by NEC on Saturday when the second most powerful body meet in Freetown.

Expectations are high that the SLPP would leave Saturday’s NEC meeting with agreement on the way forward beginning with a time table for the most anticipated lower level elections.

Party sources say a five man committee headed by the fire brand politician, the Deputy National Chairman/Leader, Dr Prince Alex Harding has already been established to look in to the petitions, complaints and concerns raised by the KKY group and other SLPP members and to make recommendation to NEC.

The committee which also includes legal luminaries like Eke Halloway and Anthony Brewah has already met several times at the party’s Wilberforce Street Office headquarter.
