Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Candidate, Mrs. Navo Kaika has emerged winner of the Constituency 001 Parliamentary bye-election in Kailahun defeating her closest rival, Haja Nasaratu Jalloh Nee Ngobeh of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC).
Official preliminary results released by the National Electoral Election (NEC) sees the SLPP Candidate pull 2959 votes while the APC Candidate has just 1619 votes.
According to the result sheet, only 19.30% of the 24671 total registered voters in the Constituency partook in the election. However, only 4578 votes were declared valid out of a total of 4762 total votes cast. Hence, 184 invalid votes were recorded in the 10 polling stations.
Recall that there been reported cases of political violence in the Kailahun town in recent days. This has prompted the government to provide adequate security ahead of the Constituency 001 Parliamentary Bye-Election slated for today July 9, 2016.
The Kailahun town has been a stronghold of the opposition SLPP. Hence, the defeat of the ruling party may be much predictable.
Earlier reports stated that the APC representatives had in the evening abandoned the polling centre after realizing a possible defeat. Unconfirmed reports going round also indicted that they are planning to protest the outcome of the result in both Kailahun and Lunsar.
It is also believed that there is a growing tension between President Koroma and his Vice President Victor Foh over the handling of the Kailahun bye election.
President Koroma only learnt this morning that the APC candidate is not even registered to vote in Constituency 001. After allegedly investing over a million dollars in the Kailahun bye election, President Koroma is reported to be very disappointed in the way Victor Foh, Maya Kaikai and Robin Fallay lied to him about the progress APC is making in Kailahun. Our source confirmed that he heard the president saying that these people have wrecked their hole plans.
