In what could be described as the most surprising political reconciliation of two heavyweight politicians, Presidential aspirant of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and former United Nations envoy, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella has invited fellow flag bearer aspirant , Maada Bio “to drinks” today, 31st December 2016.

Kandeh-Bio

He made this disclosure during a radio interview on Radio Democracy FM 98.1 on Thursday December 29th 2016 where He also answered questions on the economy, campaign and the 2018 Presidential elections.

Supporters of both candidates, the PaoPa Movement and the KKY Movement have been at logger heads from time immemorial and both are seen as the strongest rivalry in the history of the opposition SLPP. PaoPa supporters believes Kandeh Yumkella is a big threat to their leaders’s candidacy, he is also alleged to be responsible for most of the ill motivated and unfounded rumors that have trailed the Maada Bio’s campaign. Just recently, Kandah Yumkella has reportedly blasted Maada Bio as “jobless”. Importantly, the bittered rivalry between both camps has torn the opposition party apart  leaving doubts in many observers as to the competency of the party to lead Sierra Leone ahead of the 2018 presidential elections.

However, in a bit to reconcile and make peace between both parties ahead of the new year and SLPP convention in 2017, Kandeh Yumkella has publicly invited his acute rival for drinks at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown.

Observers has commended the action of the former United Nations Boss as crucial to solving the lingering crisis in the party. “The two leading flag bearer contenders, Brig. (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio and Dr. Kandeh Yumkella should be seen to be talking to each other and even working together. That is what the people of this country expect them to be doing.”, an SLPP Member said in Freetown yesterday.

Meanwhile, others have expressed disappointment in the invitation, describing it as ill motivated move to score goals against the former SLPP Presidential candidate. Richard Thoronka, a staunch Maada Bio supporter advised Maada Bio to reject the invitation alleging plans to assassinate the retired Brigadier. He questioned why the invitation was made on Radio when He could have put a call through on phone.

It’s only a matter of hours before we realize the current fate of the broken opposition SLPP. Maada Bio’s honour of Kandeh Yumkella’s invitation would however provide massive boost for the party ahead of the new year.
